MY CANON EOS R1 CONFIGURATION

Canon EOS R1 Configuration

Here is a summary of the key configurations I made to my Canon EOS R1. Note that I am not a back-button focus person and I shooting RAW.

I also added a list of features I am missing and would love to see in an upcoming firmware update.

How did you configure your EOS R1? What do you like? What would you do differently? Any feedback is welcome!

Missing options / Wishlist

Button configuration

  1. Allow assigning toggling “Pre.cont shooting: ON/OFF” to a specific button
  2. Allow assigning toggling “Whole area tracking: ON/OFF” to a specific button
  3. Allow defining a button that cycles through “Whole area tracking: OFF / Action priority: OFF” <-> “Whole area tracking: ON / Action priority: OFF” <-> “Action priority: ON”
  4. Allow for more than three custom settings “Cx” sets
  5. Allow selecting which customs settings “Cx” to make available when assigning “Switch to custom shooting mode” to a custom button, e.g., looping through current settings, C1 settings, C3 settings, or toggling between current settings and C2 settings
  6. Allow assigning “RAW image processing” to a button
  7. Allow assigning the function “RAW image processing” if the image is CR3 and “Cropping” if the image is JPG to a button

New and updated functionalities

Functionalities in italics have been added to the camera’s firmware. But I have not yet tested them!

  1. Change order of transmission back to first transmit image and then transmit audio, because that allows to derive that the image has been fully transmitted once the audio file has started transmission (this is especially relevant for slow transmissions)
  2. Add function “Panning Assist” from EOS R3 (implemented in firmware 1.1.0)
  3. Add high speed drive with up to 190+/s from EOS R3
  4. Allow multiple exposures, cropping, and resizing not only on JPG files, but also on RAW files
  5. Allow configuring number of photos and speed to be used for “Pre.cont shooting” (partialy implemented in firmware 1.1.0)
  6. Reduce drive/capture speed when buffer is 80% full to 50% of set speed, rather than stop shooting when 100% full (eventually, allow togging between the two options via menu)
  7. Add stripping mode (based on the RAID 0 idea) that saves images alternatively to the first and second card (i.e., if one card fails, only every second image is lost, without requiring additional storage)
  8. Add option that allows camera to calculate minimal depth of field required for two subjects at different distances to be in focus (such a function existed on film cameras as DEP, e.g., EOS 1-V)
  9. Add mode that automatically adjusts the brightness and colour balance of the LCD screen and the electronic viewfinder when wearing sunglasses
  10. Allow to save “Anti-flicker shoot.”, “HF anti flicker shoot.”, “External speedlite control”, “Picture Style”, White balance”, “Drive mode”, and “Pre-cont. shoot” from red menu with the AF-related setting
  11. Allow camera to digitally sign an image, associating serial number and photographer, to check authenticity (e.g., implement C2PA standard)

Autofocus functionalities

Functionalities in italics have been added to the camera’s firmware. But I have not yet tested them!

  1. Add “Action priority” mode that focuses on closest subject/object moving towards the camera (and switches subject/object if the closest subject/object changes), e.g. when shooting 100m track and field race from the front, always focus on the leading athlete
  2. Add “Action priority” mode for handball, similar to the mode for basketball
  3. Add option that allows to ignore/not focus on specific types of objects during any autofocus mode, i.e., raindrops, snowflakes, sand, nets, fences, cables, grass, e.g., “Ignore objects: xxx” (partially added to firmware 1.1.0 for nets as special case)
